Hard Drive

I'm looking for a 120 gig hard drive. Im wondering what brand to choose. I will be doing moderate gaming and noise is a mild concern. Any sugestions?

None out now are particuarly bad, just make sure you get one with an 8mb cache. According to storage review the fastest 7200 rpm line (with a 120gb capacity drive) is the hitachi 7k250, but those tend to be pricier than the other brands. Try 1200JB from WD or whatever Maxtor's 120GB drive is called for a better deal on price.

I have a 7K250 160mb drive and love it. Definitely faster than my Seagate 7200.7. It just makes a little whine every now and then to adjust its heads. I also hear the Samsung drives are nice.

Also, I've noticed that the Hitachi 7k250's are cheaper in price than the rest. I got mine for about $90 at zipzoomfly.com.

I like Hitachi because it seems to edge out the competition in speed and is very quiet, but I rank Seagate very highly. Next would be Samsung because they're reliable, cheap and all have 3-year warranties. WD is good if you want a cheap drive that still has a 3-year warranty, but I don't think it's worth the money you save.

Keep in mind that 160GB drives have the lowest cost per GB. Only 5-10 more than 120GB.

I bought the Samsung SpinPoint P80 120GB drive, and it's amazing. It's super quiet idle, and no seek noise at all. Plus, it's quite fast. I got the one with the 8MB cache.

I'd have to recommend it, I just love it.

1. None are bad. For quiet, Samsung or Seagate. For performance, WD or Hitachi.
2. DOn't get a 120GB. Get a 160GB. Better GB/$ for 160 and 200GB drives.

Notes: PATA Seagates currently are in low performance mode, and SATA ones are in high, no way to change it.

I have a Spinpoint 160GB 2MB, and Varun is about right. With the case open, I can hear seek noise...with the case closed, nada; and in both situations, I cannot hear motor whine if I am more than a foot away from the drive. However, Samsung uses different motors, and apparently the JVC ones are louder.

Yeah, ive had that for a little bit...way faster than my old WD 100gb 2mb.

I believe Newegg still has it on sale with an add'l $20 rebate.

but, if you want the space - I'd go with the afore mentioned seagate
