Hard Drive

ok guys, I need your help again

I've been browsing Tigerdirect in awe of those western digital raptors.......downside is i don't want a new mobo, and mine doesn't support SATA

Because of my dilema, i searched and found This

My question is, is this what i think it is?

So i would plug this into a pci slot right, and then the wd raptor would plug into it, and i could make this my primary HDD right?

If I'm wrong can someone please let me know, also if you guys have heard anything, either good or bad about these devices

Thanks, Graeme

You have it right. It's simply a serial ata add-on pci card. There are cheaper, better ones out there also.

yes, but i find it really hard to find certain parts in canada........and by cheaper, better did u mean cheaper and better, or there are cheaper, and there are better?

also would it be difficult to set up?

The setup is rather easy. The pci card's bios would come up after your normal bios and that is where it would identify the serial-ata hard drive. The only thing you would really have to do is go into your motherboards bios and tell it to boot off of the serial ata card. Sometimes you also have to give windows special drivers for the pci card if you are installing xp straight to the serial-ata drive.

That specific card you choose was a RAID card. If you don't have two serial ata hard drives, there really isn't any reason to pay a big premium for a RAID card. Just get a normal pci serial ata add-on card.

i just selected a raid card because i figured that i may one day buy another one of those hard drives, so i figured might aswell do it now, rather than later.

If I don't want to run a RAID mode right away is it still possible to use this adapter with one sata hardrive?

Will this upgrade increase my ingame speed?, I only play americas army, and it runs completely from my hard drive

Wait i just thought of this, would it be faster for me to just buy 2 7200rpm sata hard drives and run them in a RAID array?

Thanks again, Graeme

Ps. i love this site and the fast replys, thanks to the members and creators...........mods too i guess....lol jk, mods prolly do alot of clean up here

If you want to add raid one day, then a raid card might make sense. You don't HAVE to run raid on a raid capable card, you can just run one drive if you want. Going from parallel ata to serial ata will not add any noticable speed, unless you are moving up to a faster hard drive (either going from 2mb cache to 8mb, or going from 5400 to 7200 or to 10,000rpm)

As for games, the hard drive has little to no effect on games other than level load times. Your cpu, video card and memory determine how fast games run.
