i got the maxtor d740x for my moms computer (p2 400 and i think the abit VH6 (or something like that) mobo)

it wont even post in that computer

it posts fine in my computer (p4, etc.)

what is the deal?

if i get a controller card, can it boot from the card?

EDIT

its a BH6 not a VH6

Maybe a bios upgrade is needed for the motherboard. So it can recognize the larger drive. Depending on if your mb is vh6 or vh6 ver 1.1. There's a bios that says support for 137gb drives or larger for both. But make sure to get the one for your board. Otherwise a pci ide card would work.

think the newest one will fix this? it says a few lines down that this one is a "fix" for 40gb+ drives

woohoo think this may be the problem?

the MaxBlast utility I linked to has EZBIOS ..I put an 80GB in a p2 233 machine with it ..mobo says its a 6 ..who cares what the mobo BIOS thinks as long as it runs and is all there..;)

Try doing the bios flash like others here have said.

Check the master/slave settings on the drive.

Use ezbios if you have too.

If worse comes to worse, use the 32gb limiting jumper on the drive.

You'll probably get this drive going with a little effort. The drive obviously works and your mom's computer isn't that old. Good luck!

Go to the BIOS first and make sure the drive parameters are not set manually for your older drive. Set everything to 'auto' so that the BIOS would automatically detect the new drive's settings.
