Hard drive won't scandisk/checkdisk!!!!

I had a problem some time ago where I would set my c: drive to perform a scandisk/diskcheck on bootup and it would get to xx% through and just freeze. I would have to manually power down the pc and then bring it up again. Well, time went by and that hard drives died. Not sure if the inability to run scandisk/diskcheck was a sign or not.
Anyway I have had the new drive for some time now. Just last night I tried to run scandisk/diskcheck again. This time it made it all the way through but then the pc just froze at the Checkdisk is complete, no errors, etc. screen.
I had to hold in the power button and reboot choosing "LAst known good configuration".
Can anybody tell me what may be happening?

BTW this is on the machine in my sig and I'm running XP Pro.

probably a bit late but in BIOS turn on SMART for hdd. Basically it helps detect hdd problems, v minor performance drop i think.
