Hey guys, kinda stumped out on this... I run the Windows defragger, runs fine, 91% quits, two times... I run scandisk, normal and thorough... Run defragger, no go...

Could it be bad sectors? or whats the prob. here?

Scandisk would tell you if you had bad clusters/sectors. Try running the defragger in Safe Mode.

Quits as in crashes? with some sort of error or no error?

Or do you mean it jumps to 100% and says done?

will do...

But on another note, its a friend of the familys gate way  hehe..

I think it may just be best to format, and give it a fresh start... No point in dealing with all the garbage...

:p

I worked on an HP with this problem. Turned out it had something to do with the IDE controller, or at least thats what HP told me. I was never able to figure it out, even with a fresh install of the OS. The HD stoped at 83% on every defrag.

Reformatting is for people that have exhausted all other efforts, but cannot fix the issue at hand. Next thing you know you will need to back data up, fumble with drivers, and then restore data. A simple reformat could lead to a 2+ hour nightmare if you aren't careful.

I agree, and as I said, it did not fix the problem :(. Fortunately the HP Restore disks made it all go very smooth and fast as well.

I heard that it is better to run defrag in safemode, no drivers or anything loaded, just good ole defragging! You can give that a try.

True, but as you said it might just be a simple fix, and will check it out tomorrw.... the computer turly does have alot of problems, and the it really could use a fresh start in all aspects.. I may not even need to back up data, the computer doesn't have much on it that is important... we will see.. thanks for the help and ill keep you updated..
