Am looking at this machine for a coworker.
emachine 2.6 celery
maxtor hd
onboard graphics and sound
when you start it , it makes it as far as the xp logo then blue screens really fast and restarts. Over and over and over.
so far...first tried to boot from floppy and knoppix live cd it handled that ok(and knoppix could access hd files) ..so now I knew it was related to hd and not other hardware.
*swapped cables on hd no change.
*dug out old 1.2 gb hd i had laying around and installed xp on it till the 30 day activation fails just to try and see if that hd would boot on the emachine...result it does ,ran stable a long time
*slaved problem harddrive (hereto referred to as drive f🙂 off of it to see if system would still start...it does, ran stable a long time.
*ran norton on it without update 2004 from drive C: ran MS antispyware from drive C:
found over 90 nasties and removed. (these 2 progs and xp home maxed out this old 1.2 gb drive of mine too its full.
current thoughts: either one the mbr is fubarred or two, another virus I have not caught is restarting it
when I go to recovery console it suggests not redoing the mbr as its not a standard mbr (emachine....phhhg)
Easiest thing probably be if she has a recovery CD will have to check but she will probably say a what????
Your thoughts and suggestions🙂
*tried to start system again with F: as master drive still no go.
