Hard Drive Warranty

The other day, one of the IT guys at my school job was talking about sending some of the hard drives back before the warranty ran out. I was wondering if you guys do the same with your drives because that sounds pretty smart.

It depends on the shop where you bought it. Some they replace you HDD immediately but some other they check the drive and if they don't find problems on it they return it back to you.

There is such a thing as personal integrity. I echo Blain's last comments.

Not to mention that if you're RMA'ing to manufacturer they are most likely going to send you back recertified drive. I'd rather take old and proven to be working/reliable drive over a recertified one.

1. If by smart you mean "sleazy"...
2. You are going to send perfectly good working drives that never had any problems, so that you get back a repaired drive that used to be broken... not a good deal at all.
3. Why some and not all? if its some because those drives actually have a real problem, then yes send them before warranty expires... if it is some because he doesn't want to arouse suspicion of foul play, then don't do that.

Eh, I actually would advise against this not only in principle, but on the fact that if you have a working HD after a period of time (1 year+), its likely to continue working for awhile.

Justification: Most hard drives that are likely to die prematurely, die within the first 6 months or so.

Ditto - I've had more problems with new or "recertified" drives than old-ass drives that have been chugging along for years without problems.
