Hard drive volume label problem

I just tried to use the Cdresq program that came with my Plextor 8x20. First time I've ever tried to use it.

This software gave some sort of "crc" error in the middle - I assume meaning a corruption in the data file. When it finished, my hard drive now has some non-standard characters in the volume label.

Now I can't format it, I can't use fdisk (because I can't enter a valid volume label). Any suggestions?

Well, I called Maxtor directly (surprised they had support today) and running a low level format.

Any other suggestions would be interesting as well.

Well, end of story. An error showed up during the low level format, and it's going back to Maxtor.

Excellent service, but I don't have great luck with Maxtor drives. Three of the last four haven't made it through the warranty period.
