Hard Drive / USB ? Device

I seen somebody use a device that they could slide a hard drive on and I think that it was plugged into the computer via USB. This way they could check the drive for errors or viruses. Maybe it?s the same idea as an external hard drive but it didn't have the outer case. Does anyone know what these devises are called and where I can get one?

It plugs into the IDE interface and has a USB plug on it.
