Hard Drive: trying to recover allocation unit

Hi Guys,
Trying to format an old seagate hdd...and it's trying to recover an allocation unit(s) for about an hour now...is there any way I can just format the thing and have the bad units marked as unusable?

This means that your HD does indeed have bad sectors. It is likely to develop more of these as time goes by, and eventually die, taking all the material down with it. If your data means anything to you, don't use it.
