Hard-drive transfer from Xbox 360 to Xbox 360 Slim - One use? WTF?!

Guys,

I am about to buy an Xbox 360 Slim and want to transfer ALL of my data from my old Xbox 360 which has a 20GB HDD.

I went to Fry's and the guy there said I have to buy a proprietary cable from Microsoft for $20 and use it to transfer the data. However, this data transfer can only be done once and the cable cannot be used again? WTF kind of crock is that? 🙁

Is this true? Is there another way to transfer my data?
 
The cable can be used more than once.

Why would you listen to someone at Fry's? They know less than the people at Best Buy 🙂
 
You do NOT need that cable, however you will need a USB flash drive to move data over to the new 360 S. You can copy over your save files, DLC, etc. However, in order to get your DLC to work on your new console, you will need to either be signed in with the XBOX Live account that purchased it or you will need to transfer over all purchase licenses from your old XBOX to your new one. This license transfer will enable any account on your new console to use the content, not just the one who bought it.

The license transfer, however, can only be used once per year (this is why I think most people think the cable can only be used once). Go here to get started: www.xbox.com/drm

If you have any more questions, ask away. I bought a new Reach 'S' console a couple months ago and did the whole transfer process from my older 20GB unit.

Hmm.. that's interesting.. but I was told that using a flash drive will enable me only to transfer only certain data and not everything (?)... plus my biggest flash drive is only 8GB.. and I have like 18GB of data..

I just ordered the cable on amazon.. should I cancel it?

I want to transfer everything.. profiles, game saves, downloads... everything.. will using a flash drive enable me to do that?

I transfered my profile, all of my game saves, and my Borderlands DLC that I had just downloaded a few days beforehand. Everything else, including arcade titles and other random DLC, I just re-downloaded through Live.
 
This is why you spend the extra for genuine Monster transfer cables.

They cost $99 instead of $20, but their fiber-reinforced cuperide strandiums can withstand 8-10 full xbox data transfers before the cable explodes.

The 2010 model even includes a warning strip that changes color as the cable absorbs bit radiation. When the strip turns black just discard the cable and buy a new one.

Don't hate. Monster cables are great to own in the event you suddenly need to relocate your tv 150 feet from your xbox. Thats why you should spend $100 on a cable even though $12 will suffice. *sarcasm alert 😀

The cable can be used more than once.

Now one end of it is designed for the old harddrives to plug into. The new "S" hard drive has a different type of conection.

In your case, as was mine not too long ago, once you transfer your data to the "S" console the cable becomes useless as you can't directly plug the "S" harddrive into it.
