hard drive "ticking" probs

recently only, my hard drive(s) has been making a weird ticking noise. when this occurs, my comp seems to freeze for a couple of seconds. also, xp, (which i never had a prob b4) crashed twice. could i have a virus? or is my drive defective? thanks, and please help

You're going to have to provide a lot more information if you want any substantive help. What model hard drive? Manufacturer? Mobo? Generic or brand-name power supply? The more detail you can provide the better.

ok, i am running an amd xp 1700+ on a gigabyte 7dx-r mobo, 2x 40gb 400bb wd ide drives, and running xp

Have you enabled SMART monitoring for your hard drives? If so, does the Bios report an error with them?
Have you tried using the WD Data Lifeguard Tools? There are supposedly Diagnostics on there. If you don't have the disk, reply with your e-mail and I'll zip and send it to you.

I had a WD 300BB and it started making the clicking sounds. The computer would momentarily freeze during the access when it would click. The situation became progressively worse until the drive failed. Luckily I backed up everything before total failure. The WD diagnostic software did not detect any fault until total failure. I would backup then call their support. They even have a topic on the problem under knowledge base.
