Hard Drive Temperatures?

I was wondering what is considered a safe Hard Drive temperature? In one machine mine run in the 80's/F and another machine has a drive running in the low 90's/F.

What is a reasonable temperature for a drive to run? What is considered too hot?

Ehhh, too cold is also bad, according to the google study. http://209.85.163.132/papers/disk_failures.pdf

Although, higher temps also lead to higher failures in later years (see p. 6). Go figure. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Seems like 35C-40C is the sweet spot, with higher temps better for new(er) drives, and lower temps better for older drives, but never less than 35C.

Mine are around 30c all the time. I doubt that a HD idling at 20c would be bad either. Does that mean they store HD's in preheated rooms?

A good case should have a 120mm fan in front of the HDD. Nominal working temp is 30 to 35C. Add another 5C with 85F ambient.

There should only be a 10C increase in HDD temp if there is adequate air flow from the front 120mm. 25C room will result in 35C HDD temp under normal condition.

I don't believe that a cooler running HDD will be bad. My Seagates run about 32C in my Antec 900 with a 120mm fan in front of them.
