Hard drive stuck in DMA mode 2???

I have a WD 160 GB 7200 rpm hd on primary IDE channel set as master, its the only thing on that channel. an optical disk is on secondary ide channel.

looking in device manager, under ide ata/atpi controllers under primary ide channel advanced properties the transfer mode for both devices is set to 'DMA if available' but the primary HD is using ultra dma mode 2 as the 'current transfer mode'.

I have reinstalled win xp a bunch of times now, set jumpers on that hard drive to master, cs, slave etc and it simply won't run at its proper faster dma mode 5 ata100/133 speed.

looking in event viewer I get the following error which on the MS web site says it most likely related to a cable problem even though the actual error message says 'controller error'. It's a fairly new cable, but i believe in the past ive tried a few different ata100/133 cables on that same hard drive with no better results.

what the hell is going on, why can't i get this hd to use a faster IO mode? Thanks

1) change your WD's jumper from Master to Single Drive

2) Delete the IDE controller from Device Manager so it gets re-detected on the next boot-up

3) ensure that your ATA cable is 80-wire, in good condition, and that the drive is on the end plug, not the middle plug, to prevent signal bounce.

i have tried both jumper positions.

i am using an 80 wire cable, its almost brand new and have tired a few different ones, the drive is on the end plug.

k, try #2 there. Also can help in situations where your optical drive gets stuck in PIO mode.

ok tried that to, didn't work. after the POST when it detects ide devices it lists the drive as ata33. in the bios the correct drive model is listed so im not sure why it wont run at full speed, i know for sure the drive is ata100/133.

The other thing you'd want to do is go to the BIOS, find the drive after setting detection to Auto and read off what the setting its getting detected is.

If the BIOS itself is detecting it as DMA2, then you're SOL.
