Hard Drive Speed

At the risk of sounding dumb....What determines the speed you should get when looking for a new hard drive? 5,400 or 7,200....I just would like to know if the average Joe would see the difference in the speed to justify the price difference or do different programs really notice the difference in speed?

Thanks
Dave

as a main drive with the operating system and programs, it's worth it to get a 7200rpm drive. if it's just for bulk storage like mp3's, divx movies, etc... then it doesn't matter too much.

Yes, you should certainly have a 7200rpm, 2 meg cache HD as your boot up drive. There is a big performance gain and your programs will be accessed and work faster. 5400 drives are good as secondary drives, or as a storage area.

definitely get a 7200 rpm drive, this will decrease your rotational latency. also when looking for a hard disk, be aware of the access time more than anything. this is often the most important factor next to spindle speed in determining the overall speed of the hard disk. the lower, the better.
