Is there a way to tell whether a drive is running at 5400 rpm or 7200 rpm without opening the case? (maybe some benchmarking software?)
 
Do you know what HD you have? you could always check when it boots up what it says and check online for that model. AS you say, you can also open it up and look at your HD, and compare it to online references.... personally I know all my drives(prolly b/c I built the thing), thats why I dont know about any software... but both the above methods will work fine 🙂
