I'm having a problem with my HP dv6000 laptop with 32-bit Vista. As these models are prone to do, my power socket (where the AC adapter plugs in) went bad and I had to replace it. So I took out the whole daughterboard (it has the socket and one USB) and replaced it about a week ago.
Things were going fine, but yesterday I noticed when I booted up the computer, it took about 10 times longer to load any application than it used to. That effect goes away after about 20 minutes of being powered up. Then everything's fine.
Today, I booted up and instead of going into Windows, the computer forced me to run chkdsk. It aborted on step three, while checking the "USR Journal," because it said it couldn't read the "$J data stream." I did some brief reading online, and some say this is a harbinger of a soon-to-be-dead hard drive.
I'm past warranty on this bad boy (that's why I did the socket repair myself), so I look to the geniuses of this community for help. Is there anything I can do to try to fix this short of replacing the hard drive?
On a related note, if I do need a new hard drive, is there a way to do that without having to purchase Vista again? This laptop came with a recovery partition rather than a disc. Can I somehow burn the data on that partition onto a disc and use it as I would a regular Vista install disc? Are there legal problems with doing that, even though I'm keeping the same computer and just switching the hard drive?
