hard drive size in xp vs 98

When I boot into xp, it says my hard drive size is smaller than when I boot into 98. I lose about 1 gb. Is is normal?

No. I had a similar problem and found that my multiple attempts at installation/formatting/partitioning of XP had screwed up the partition archtecture of my Maxtor drive. Tried everything including low level format and PartitionMagic 7. The drive would not read correctly in XP, but fine in DOS.

No recourse for me. It is on it's way back to Maxtor and they are RMA'ing me a new one.
