i'm considering going to a basic 15k scsi setup since its not as expensive as it was 2 years ago. however, scsi drives are WAY too loud. anything to keep it to normal sane levels?

Is it seek noise or idle noise that you're concerned with? Seek noise on SCSI drives is like exhaust noise on a Dodge Viper, it's The Way Things Ought To Be. Idle-wise, the current 15k models might surprise you... have you heard the drive you plan to get yet?

the smartdrive enclosure is designed for 5400rpm or LOWER drives. 7200rpm drives overheat in it, so there is no way a 15k drive would work without problems

Go with a Cheatah 15k.3, they're supposed to be the quietest 15k drives. I had a Cheatah X15-36lp (15k.2) and it was pretty quiet even though it's a generation below the 15k.3.

I have one of each. Mrs. Cheetah (the 15k.3) is definitely quieter on seeks and quite pleasant all around IMHO. A definite contrast to my astoundingly-loud Atlas 10k, with its crazy idle whine and its popcorn-popper seek noises. Mr. Cheetah (the X15-36LP) is a bit louder on seeks but still quite liveable to me. But people vary.

Anyway, I've heard a lot of ball-bearing ATA drives that make plenty more noise than Mr. or Mrs. :) They are nowhere near the noise of my Barracuda 7200.7 but then again you'll never catch me labelling the Cheetahs "snail drives" either

I own two of these in a RAID stripe. Before that, I only had one by itself.

At idle the TWO drives are quieter than my WD SE 120GB drive. No kidding and no bull.

When they are seeking, you know they are SCSIs, but they are not anything like the old Maxtor 10K drives. AKA "BBs in a tin can." The MAS drives are pure perfection. For what they cost, they better be!
