I have a problem with my computer randomly freezing up randomly. When this occurs it sounds like one or more of my hard drives are shutting off. Then my computer freezes up and my second monitor goes blank and my primary monitor stays on with whatever was last displayed. My power supply is still running and my optical drives are still powered. The strange thing is when I check my event logs, it appears as if it is still recording events the whole time. Here is my system specs:

Antec Sonata w/Truepower 380W
P4 1.8
512mB ram
Intel mobo ( i forgot the model # )
80GB WD hard drive (OS)
120GB WD hard drive
40GB Seagate hard drive
20GB WD hard drive
Liteon DVD-ROM
Liteon CD-RW
NEC floppy drive
NEC 3500a DVD+/- RW
Apollo Radeon 8500
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro
Ali PCI USB 2.0 card
Promise IDE card
Creative VideoBlaster

Thanks in advance!

If you're sure something's coming from the hard drive, I recommend running Western Digitals Hard Drive Diagnostics Tool to see if it picks up anything strange.

If that doesn't detect anything then you should run a chkdsk (run>chkdsk) to check the file system etc.

If nothing comes up after that I would recommend that you try to eliminate each piece of hardware on your machine. A common cause of freezing up in my experience is usually overheating, although in saying that you have a heck load of Optical / Storage devices so it *could* be power related.

Try all sorts of things to eliminate the problem, try unplugging hardware from your machine and just leave the bare essentials in there and see if you're still getting problems.

Cheers,
