Hard drive shutdown issues in Windows XP Pro

I am using Windows XP Pro (SP1 and all patches and all drivers updated) and I replaced my faulty 40GB Western Digital hard drive with another 40GB Western Digital drive. The drive is identical in all specs, but of course, manufactered on an earlier date. I never had any shutdown problems with the older drive, but I noticed that this newer drive acts strangely on shutdown.

When I do a shutdown in Windows XP, I can hear my other hard drive, a 100GB WD, shutdown first. Then I hear the 40GB shutdown, but the moment after it shuts down, it turns back on again, and then the whole system shutsdown as the 40GB is spinning back up again.

This never happened with my original 40GB. Both the 40GB and the 100GB shutdown together at the same time (you could hear them).

In addition, the newer 40GB makes an audible clicking sound when there are read/writes. I know that some drives do this, but my original 40GB didn't. The newer drive is made in Thailand (as opposed to Malaysia for the older one) and only 1 year warranty (as opposed to 3 years for the older one).

Does anyone know a solution to this shutdown problem!? Thanks!

my system specs are:
P4 at 2.0A GHz
256MB RDRAM
Intel 850MV mobo
40GB WD 7200 rpm drive
100GB WD 7200 rpm drive
DVD/CDRW
USB/FireWire
Creative TV Tuner

oh yeah, I have my 40GB configured as Master and 100GB configured as Slave. Windows XP sits on the 40GB and the page file sits on the 100GB.
