Hard Drive shrink problem.

I run in this wierd problem with my laptop i don;t know how to explain it. I am preparing a laptop to be sold by reformating the hdd and reinstall a window on it. but the wiersest thing happen. I am pretty sure that the total hdd space is 8 gig, but after reformatting into ntfs and install window xp, the end result is total of 5 gig hdd, IO somehow lost 3 gig of space, it is the one of the wierdest thign ever happen to me. Is there some logical explanation for this?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but if the hard drive is found to have bad sectors on it, won't the OS mark those off and not count them as space anymore?

it show 7-8 gig before i begin the reinstallation

first 8GB does not = 8GB, it would be in the high 7GBs, next a full up-to-date install of xp with all the bells and whistles and updates may take over 1GB so if you are getting 5.5GB or so you may be right on.

The combination of accessible capacity may vary as some OS uses binary numbering system for reported capacity and the fact that windowsxp takes up about 2.5 gigs what you have left over seems completely normal.

nono, the max capacity went from a high of high of a 7 gig to a low to roughly 5 giga after a reinstallaion of window xp

check if u can make another partition in unused space

go start->settings->control panel->administrative tools->computer management->storage->disk management and see what is in there

maybe the extra space somehow didn't get accounted for and is just sitting there
