I have this old hard drive, a Samsung WU32543A that is accessible when I boot off a Win98 boot disk but the hard drive doesn't show up in My COmputer. I'm using WIndows XP Pro SP1. The drive is FAT formatted. I've tried hooking it up as a master on the secondary channel and even tried setting the jumper to master and cable select. Nothing works. Any ideas??? I don't understand why DOS would recognize the drive and not Windows.

Did you look in Disk Management to see if it shows up there? If so you may be able to make it accesible in XP.

Right click on My Computer - > Manage -> Disk Management -> Right click on your drive, make sure it is set as "active",

the drive does not show up in disk management. I know it's there b/c the bios and DOS detect it, just not Windows.

Does Samsung have a utility for formatting their drives? Also there might be a new version of firmware/BIOS for it so it might pay to check their site anyway.

Samsung requires you to give a serial number from a Samsung drive to get their utility(Diskette Creator by Ontrack..never was able to get it to unpack and make diskette tho :disgust: )

Answer to an old question....
maybe the same issue as a hdd installed in system running 98 (Fat format) not being regonized because the
2nd hdd is NTSF format..... if Fat can't read NTSF...>>>then would it be reasonable that NTSF can't read Fat...
You're running XP=NTSF....old drive...sounds obvious...Fat formatted.

incorrect. the file system of the system drive has NOTHING to do with the reading of another filesystem type. win9x/dos couldnt read ntfs becuase it doesnt support it, simple as that. win2k for example can use both fat and ntfs syste,s

Did you try using the 98 start up disk to delete the partition and create a new one with a fresh format. Maybe it will see it then.
