I just purchased the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe and need to hookup the following drives;

1. WD 100GB (Primary OS)
2. Maxtor 160GB (Data)
3. Maxtor 160GB (Video)
4. DVD Writer
5. CD Writer
6. DVDROM

My initial plan was as follows;

1. WD 100GB (Primary OS) - PRI/MASTER
2. Maxtor 160GB (Data) - Maxtor PCI Card
3. Maxtor 160GB (Video) - Maxtor PCI Card
4. DVD Writer - PRI/SLAVE
5. CD Writer - SEC/SLAVE
6. DVDROM - SEC/MASTER
(SATA disabled on the motherboard)

Are there any advantages to using PATA to SATA adapters on the data and video drives?
Are there any known issues with plugging in a PCI IDE card like the Maxtor?

Any suggestions in general?

looks good unless you plan to move a lot of data from Data to Video or from Vid to Data

No Advantage to SATA in this case b/c the SATA controller is just like the expansion card you are using just built into the motherboard. There shouldn't be any major issues using the the PCI card, no more than using the SATA card...

Thanks for the the reply. I do move data between the two Maxtors but it's usually done by processing a raw stream of data that was captured on one HD to a DVD MPEG on the other. I don't think I can process and convert the files fast enough to cause a problem.

looks fine, keep the 2 maxtors on their own cable and you'll be fine. all hard drives set to master, optical drives se accordingly with DVD reader on primary cable (slave)
CD-DVD-burners on secondar cable (so you can copy DVD's fast and burn discs fast from all the HD's.
