Plastic isn't automatically a worse choice than metal for a HD case. Worse heat conductive qualities yes, possible issues with heating and expansion, possible permeability for water and quite a few other possibles depending on what plastic is used, but if it's made in the clean room like the ones in metal then there's no reason it can't be as good reliability wise.

But in general it's decades of work and prescision engineering coupled with a massive industry and ever increasing tolerances.

Things that are only around in testing phases and for governemnt level budgets are no match for currently availible systems.
