Hard Drive Resetting

I have got a 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA hard drive which I have been using for a couple of weeks now. Today however the drive has started to "reboot" itself (I'm guessing this from the noise the drive is making, very similar to the noise made when the computer is restarted and hard drives spool up) when it is being accessed.

There doesn't appear to be any data corruption occuring when the drive reboots but anything accessing files on the drive is temporarily frozen.
eg. copying files using windows doesn't fail with an error message but pauses until the drive is running again.

I have tested the drive in both my main desktop machine and in an external USB enclosure (on the desktop and a laptop) so I know that it isn't the motherboard or OS that is causing issues. I have run the Maxtor PowerMax utility which reports the drive as okay (after a full scan).
Has anyone else ever experienced a similar problem and do you have any suggestions?

Thanks

The drive is dying. Call Maxtor and explain, hold the phone near it while it makes the noises if they won't accept the drive without a PowerMax error code.

Guess I'll have to do that, ah well. Though it could be interesting holding the phone next to the drive for long enough that the problem repeats itself! Phone bill will be more than price of a new drive ;)

Thanks, if anyone else has any ideas then I'll still have drive for a few more days while I rescue as much stuff off it as possible!
