I did a fresh install of XP pro on a WD 200GB hdd (8mb cache) and added chipset drivers, SP2 and a few apps. Didn't notice till I was done with that but windows reports over 60GB of used disk space. When I explore C: while showing hidden files and system files I only see Size 3.19GB Size on disk 3.07GB. Where did that other 60GB come from?

There is nothing in the recyle bin. I see the 60GB usage with a right click on C: --> properties. I also see it in the Computer Management MMC --> Disk Management. Before the install I ran WD diagnostic tools and it came back with no errors.

???Stumped???

Windows XP (before SP1) will only recognize something like up to 137 Gigs. Obviously, installing SP1 after the fact your hard drive is partition and formatted won't help. Go to WD site and download Data Lifeguard Tools V. 11.0. Follow the instructions below and your problem will be solved (I think:)).

Here are the instructions:

The Data Lifeguard Tools 11 CD will allow you to partition and format an internal hard drive larger than 137GB. To set up your hard drive using the Data Lifeguard Tools 11 CD, please follow the steps below:

1. Boot your computer and insert the Data Lifeguard Tools 11 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Set your BIOS to boot to your CD-ROM drive first. Save the setting and exit the BIOS.

3. You will be presented with a menu, choose option 1 which is Run Data Life Guard.

4. Click I Agree to accept the License Agreement.

5. You may see a message telling you that the drive is not set up for use in your system. If you receive this message click on the YES button.

6. On the next screen choose the operating system you plan to install and click Next.

7. Select Advanced Installation and click Next.

8. Read the warning messages and select I'm certain my system supports drives larger than 137 GB. and click Next.

9. Click Add.

10. Select the partition size you want. If you wish to use the whole drive for one large partition, leave the partition size at 100%.

11. If you wish to make a smaller boot partition then adjust the partition size accordingly.

12. Once you have set the partition size the way you want it, click OK.

13. Click Next.

14. You will see a window showing how the drive will be set up, click Next.

15. Data Lifeguard will partition and format the drive based on your previous selections. When it has finished click on the Done button.

16. Click on the Exit option.

17. Select choice 4 which is Quit.

18. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive and press any button to continue.

19. The drive should now be ready for you to install your operating system.

The drive is recognized in the BIOS and in Windows as a 200GB drive. It recognized during the install as a the full drive as well.

I had already run the WD Data life guard software. There is a version that runs in windows so I will try it again.
