I have a 40 gig HD for my PC that I'm going to sell. I want to take the 40 gig out and put in a 20 gig HD. The only thing is the 20 gig has problems on it. I don't know what happend. When I used the 20 gig last time it worked perfectly. I just left the HD in a box for awhile. When I put it back in to replace the 40 gig it has many problems on it. The computer can read it, but it can't be reformatted. Everytime I tried, it would say Format Terminated or just not have any percentage rate. I would do it in MS-Dos by the way. Also when I used my 40 as the master and the 20 as the slave when I entered windows and opened the 20 gig it would say device is not working properly or something like that. So is ther any way I can repair the HD or something. I do not want to have to buy another one so I can sell it for a cheapter price. So please someone help me please. This is $300.00 I can make with a free repair to my HD. Please someone help me please.

If there is nothing on the hard drive you care about, then download the drive manufacturer's diagnostics and use it to write zeroes to the drive. The program's usually make a bootable floppy disk. If it can be fixed this should do it. Otherwise you may still have some warranty on it too.

Go to the manufacturer's website to see if it's still under warranty, if it is, follow their instructions for receiving an RMA.

Red Beared: Where can I get the Drive Manufacturer's Diagnostics? I went to the Samsung site and got this program called Dc10_global.exe. They call it the Disk Manager Creator. Is this what your talking about?

Werk: What do you mean there RMA? I see it on the Samsung website, but what does RMA stand for. This is just a personal question for increasing my knowledge. What does it do also?

Hey you two, thanks for your help I appreciate it a lot. Thanks. You guys saved me $300 bucks if this works.

If it's still under warranty, they will issue an RMA number so you can sent it back.

This looks like the utility that would wipe the drive the easiest. Their utilities seem to leave a little to be desired. Most of the other drive makers have everything incorporated all on one disk. You could also try downloading seagates drive utility. It used to have a generic test included with it so you could use it on other drives.

I had to test a Seagate drive the other day, and was pleasantly surprised to see that they have a web-based diagnostic tool! Now that is nice! No more downloading and creating a boot disk, rebooting, etc. Just click on your drive and test away! Very nice. :)
