Hard drive: reloaded windows on new hard drive and put it as the primary. The original HD went as secondary. However

However, it still shows as the C drive. The new hard drive shows as F (D & E) are CD-RON and CD-RW). Should I take out the old drive and reload windows again on the new hard? Will that make it C instead of F?

I kept the old hard drive to copy my files to the new hard drive.

Both hard drives are Maxtor.

Sounds like you got a cable / jumper the wrong way round 😕

Make sure the primary hard drive is at the end of the cable, and that the secondary is in the middle.

Double check your jumpers to make sure they are all correct.

If all else fails, use partition magic and change the drive letters around.

I made sure that the new hard drive is the primary and the old hard drive is the secondary. The fresh install of windows booted to the new hard drive.

Should I just take out the old hard drive and reinstall windows on the new hard drive?

And then after the new hard drive is the c HD, I will put the old hard drive in as secondary?

Yes...right click My Computer and go to Manage. Under the Storage heading on the left, select Disk Management. Proceed to right click the drive you want to change the letter of and scroll down to Change Drive Letter and Path... Swap the letters and your all done. Enjoy!

It would not let me change the new hard drive boot drive. I could change the old drive (c) to (G) but it would not allow me for the new one. It said it was the boot drive and it would not allow it.

BIOS set to boot C first(might have to Clear to have a redetection)..new Maxtors should be set as CS and the IDE cable position determines which is Master/Slave(might have to physically move their place/mounting in your case )..if your new drive has definitely been loaded with your OS ..gl

Moving around your hard drives after installing the OS will mess up your drive letters. I suggest you check your jumpers, and then reinstall Windows on the primary master.

I took out the old HD and left in the new HD on the primary cable select. Reinstalled and updated windows xp and then put in the old drive. The new drive is c and the old is now f.
