I need a program that can recover data from a dead hard drive. My D: chrashed last nigh, and it has all my downloads and MP3's on it. Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
How did it crash? Hardware (like the click of death where the drive just makes a grinding and clicking noise) or something's erased the drive or parts of it?
The data seems to be intact, just the *files* are gone. There are several jibberish files that combined are the size of the total drive before. The file system is the only thing that is corrupt, I think, and all the info i need is still there.
Try running the Fdisk /mbr. Scandisk afterwards and then Defrag. Then try booting in Dos and try accessing the drive again. If you can see the files then start copying your files to another media.

Don't do a defrag if you're trying to recover data from a drive. Moving data around is just going to lessen your chances at data recovery. (It's kinda hard to recover something if it's been written over).
Power Quest has a piece of software, Lost and Found ver. 1.06, that is designed to do just what you want. L&F was recently being given away as a promotional item -- I believe Power Quest was discontinuing the software -- so you should be able to locate it for free. Sorry, I don't have a link to offer you.
The PowerQuest link will say the promotion closed October 26, but it still works. I just downloaded it a few minutes ago -- 3498.1Kb. You will need the serial 2453-8301-1114-7465 which you may overlook copying in the first screen. Good luck.

What ever you do NOT run DEFRAG as it updates your MBR and will delete any trace remaining data u want to recover, Go and purcahse PowerQuest Lost and Found, it will try to reconcurt your data and your MBR. Do not save anything to your hard drive.
Use your browser and do a web search for Unformat. That will bring up several excellent recover tools which can even handle post FDISK and format screwups.
Sounds like your drive may have gotten a minor power surge and corrupted your FAT.
