Hard Drive Recovery Help

My friend gave me a Western Digital WD5000AAKS eStata 500GB hard drive and said that it failed and he needs his pictures off of it.

I have never attempted serious data recovery before, but I thought that I could try GetDataBack and see what happens.

But, when I put the drive in the PC, not even the BIOS will recognize it, although it does slow the boot time.

Coincidentally my main drive is also a WD5000AAKS so I know that it should not have issues with my system(Vista 32 w/ Intel DP35DP motherboard).

I even set the Jumper to place the drive in sata 1 mode to see if it would help and it did not.

So is there anything else that I can do to recover the data? I have tried all the tricks that I can think of. I believe that the drive electronics is dead and if he wants his data back he must go to a true data recovery company.

If the BIOS won't properly recognize the drive, then there's a serious hardware problem and no software can fix it.

The simplest fix is a new PC board. Beyond that, it may need a new motor, or the heads or platters may be damaged. Regardless, recovery is likely beyond what's practical for most non-experts.
