Hard drive recovery help

I was getting some random "delayed write failure" error pop-ups in windows, referring to my storage drive. I rebooted thinking that it might clear up the problem, instead BIOS and Windows can no longer detect the HDD. Both the BIOS POST process and the Windows load process hang while they try and detect the drive. (disconnecting the drive results in normal speedy boot-up).

Any tips or suggestions for repairing this drive so I can recover the data on it?

Same thing has happened to me recently. Twice in fact. First was a 2 1/2" drive in an external enclosure that made it to Iraq and back before causing the "delayed write failure" error. Same Bios/Windows behavior that you describe. I wrote that off to the conditions under which it had been used. More recently, a 3 1/2" drive failed in another external enclosure. Just got a replacement drive from Seagate today and I'm about to feed it to the lions and see what happens. With regards to recovery, I had some success using a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. I was only able to read each drive about twice and even then some files were corrupted and couldn't be copied.
