Hard drive recommendations.

This is for a tivo swap. At least 250GB, bigger if the price is right. Has to be ide. I have heard that Maxtor Quickview drives are made specifically for dvr's, etc. That's the way I'm leaning but I can't really find alot of places that sell them.
My last drive is a WD Raptor and before that they have been maxtor just because of the price.

I am open to any suggestions.

Just ran a quick search and see the seagate for 99 after MIR. Would rather not del with the MIR but it's not a deal breaker. The I see a post about someone with multiple failing 300GB seagates. Although I've been around long enough to know that all drives will eventually fail, I think I may pass on the seagate.
Any other suggestions?

Well my personal opinion is go with a Seagate, if not that one then a diferent Seagate.

I have had bad luck with Maxtor drives and found many others have as well.

Western Digital makes some great drives also, here is one for $99

Thanks Gamer. I haven't ever owned a seagate but wouldn't mind one. Just reading through that thread made me think twice. Plus I didn't want to do a MIR.
I did see a 300/320GB WD that was only ~125 that I bookmarked on my home pc. May reconsider that. I have owned several maxtors and even had one DOA maxtor but I know that's bound to happen with any drive at some point.
Also the WD you linked is SATA. Tivo only has ide connection but I'll look around zzf to see if they have a comparable ide.

For a TiVo application, I'd suggest a Samsung Spinpoint.
Stay away from 16MB cache HDs. I've read that DVR's have issues dealing with the larger cache.

Seagate did have a bad run of hdds earlier this year . . . I got 6 earlier in the year (May) and haven't had trouble with a single one. You just missed a couple really good deals on hdds. Best Buy had WD 120gb for $40 w/o rebates not too long ago.

My best advice is to keep an eye on the hot deals forum.

Budget - Get Seagate
Performance - Get the WD4000YR

Take it from a seagate guy, this drive rules.

I seem to have read someone recenlty saying he took his drive out of his tivo to swap and it was a 7200rpm WD. With that said, I think that most tivos in the past have had 5400rpm drives in them.

I'm still on the fence on this one. Just not sure which way to go. The samsung above looks nice and a decent price but I never hear much at all about samsung drives.
Just want a quiet, reliable drive for this.
Keep suggesting if anyone has any other ideas or knows of some deals.

Yeah, but i can't remember the last time i saw a 5,400 RPM desktop drive.

Get the largest on you can afford or a Samsung Spinpoint, performance is a non issue for TiVo, so size is the only real factor unless noise is important to you, in which case get a Spinpoint.

If you want more info on spinpoints there are two places to look, SPCR and storage review. The latter has a reliability survey running and the former loves the things to bits because they are quiet.

What is SPCR? link?
I definately want one that is quiet. This is going in our master bedroom and I want it as quiet as possible.

Storage size isn't that important because anything over 250 should suffice. I probably won't ever have it full. I just like recording things on the highest level.

LoL :laugh: I wish my RePlayTV had a larger HD than its 160GB.
It's nice to be able to record movies for view later and not worry about space.

Yes, DVR's use 5400RPM HDs. But the SpinPoints run cool and quiet. You really don't get as big a bang for your buck with the current 5400RPM drives as you do with the 7200's.
Get the 250GB Samsung... you'll be good to go! :thumbsup:

SPCR = Silent PC review a place for those that like having a computer that can run at full load and still be able to sleep next to it without ear defense. Some go for absoulte silence, or as close as possible, a few go for the max power they can get but with an eye to noise.
