Hard Drive recommendation?

So, I have most of my components settled but I just need some validation on the Hard Drive choice because I've never used a Samsung drive.

Specifically looking at this: SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD501LJ 500GB

I'm basing my decision on this Anandtech article and this Tom's Hardware review of thw 1TB Spinpoint

I'd just like to be assured this drive is stable and high quality. I'm more interested in a drive that wont cause me issues than raw speed. I normally use Seagate or WD, so if anyone has any suggestions they feel are superior (and not overpriced) at around 500-750GB then please let me know! :)

Other components I'm using in this build:

Motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz
Graphics Card: EVGA GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB or... the MSI NX8800GT 512M OC GeForce 8800GT 512MB

I can vouch for the samsung 500gb, got the exact same HD, it's quiet, cool running, and plenty fast. There are faster 500gb HD's though, like in the anandtech article, but in real world applications theres barely any difference. The 1tb spinpoint is significantly faster though and shouldn't be directly compared to the 500gb samsung spinpoint, they have different platters as far as I know, so different density's.

Yeah, that 500 GB Samsung isn't what i'd have on the top of my list.

If prices are very close, i'd get Seagates in the 500 GB size purely for the longer 5 yr. warranty.

But for a good performing HDD with lots of space, one should be looking at the new 640 GB WD & Samsung (if you can find it) that are constructed with only two platters, increasing performance as a result.

I greatly prefer Seagate myself, also based on performance benchmarks from tom's hardware but more importantly, because of the 5 year warranty (Versus 3 with samsung) and the fact that I've personally had terrible luck with samsung products in the past of many different varieties...

added onto the fact that 2 acquaintances of mine (electrical engineers) who used to work at samsung tell me that they don't buy samsung products anymore, because of poor QC and cutting corners in manufacturing processes. Take that for what it's worth because this was about 3 years ago that I heard this, samsung may have improved since then

I have a Seagate AND a Samsung and the Samsung seems a little faster and it's a bit quieter. I'd go with the Samsung.

Thanks all for the input. It's so odd that this is a tough choice for me of all the various components. I'm probably over-thinking it, it's just you want your drive to be stable and perform well.

Those who recommended the Seagates, do you have the .10's or .11's?

N7 that drive is very interesting, I'll keep an eye on it but I tend to shy away from newer products with a short track record.

The performance reviews I've seen generally put the Samsung a little bit behind the 7200.11's if I recall correctly, although I could be wrong.

Nonetheless, I own a Samsung and I've got no complaints.

Some times we try to squeeze "Better" when it does Not Matter.

Either HD would be good.

I would buy the less expensive.

However positive emotional gain worth money too.

Thus if One is emotionally dependent on what he/she buys, he/she should buy what ever makes them happy.
