Hard drive really better?

I have a Hitachi HTS548040M9AT00 in a laptop. The computer was exibiting strange issues.

I ran the quick and extended tests on it and got error.

Drive Fitness Test failure code 0x75 defective device.

Then I tried to repair unreaable sectors and it failed to do that.

Then it passed the quicktest because I tested it again but still failed the extended.

Then after backing up the data I did the erase option with the Drive fitness test and now when I do quick or extended it passes with no trouble.

Do you think it's really better or in cases like this is it probrably going to start having problems not too long into the future?

It could be you just had an error on the partition, and when you deleted it and created a new partition, the error went away.

How about a SMART test: Does it pass SMART? You can use Everest to detect SMART status.

Anyway, if it is a new drive, and under warranty, you ought to send it back and get a new one: Just in case.

Yes, it does a SMART test and it passes.

No warranty on this one I think. It came in a dell computer and there is no warranty on the dell.

Unless there is possibly a warranty that would still be on the Hitachi drive, I believe the computer is about 2 years old.

Do hard drives that come in Dell computers have a warranty from Hitachi?

I tested the drive many times after doing the erasing option kept passing. So I reinstalled everything now testing it again I'm back to the error 75, it fails the repair again the only other option is to erase, so I guess the HD must be toast.

This model has a known read head failure issue. It will start not reading properly, then clicks, then fails. We are getting about 20-40 of these drives in per month having various issues.

Its time to replace the HDD, my Hitachi did the same before it failed. I've have since replaced it. Tried to save it, but to no avail. File 13.
