does anybody have any idea why my hard drive would turn on and off on its own? ill be in the middle of doing something, and ill hear it power down. mouse stops moving, i cant do anything for a second or two. then it powers right back up, and everything is fine. it does this while im not using it as well, turns off and comes right back on.

when i goto the power scheme control panel, and set "turn hard disks off after" to never, it seems like it stops. but i could be wrong, because i never know when it will happen. ive got a Gigabyte GA-7VRXP motherboard. its got a via kt333 chipset, and a promise raid/ata133 onboard. the promise is set to ata133. ive got one hard drive on the primary controller, and two cd drives on the seconday. then ive got two storage hard drives on the promise. im pretty sure its the hard drive on the primary controller thats going to sleep, and its where windows and everything is installed.

im really hoping the drive isnt bad, but is this a symptom of a bad drive at all? i have s.m.a.r.t. turned on, i dont know if its any good... the drive is an IBM 75gxp 60gb.

somebody please tell me its a simple software problem, and how to fix it??

I had a similar problem that I fixed by switching channels (IDE) that the drive was on. This should have done nothing for me but the drive never turned off again, very strange... you may want to try that if all else fails
