Hard Drive / RAID question

Currently using a 30 gig drive. Switching to dual 13.5 gig drives to (eventually) go to a RAID config when I buy a decent controller.

First question:

If I copy my main system partion from my 30 gig to one of the 13.5 gig drives, will/should I be able to then just hook up that 13.5 drive up as my master and boot fine off of it?

Second:

When I do get a RAID controller, will that require a reformat and reinstall while running in RAID? Or will I basically just plug it in and be good to go?

It's been a while since I've done anything with RAID, and I don't remember much. If someone could give me a quick bit on which mode is best for performance, i'd appreciate it.

If you are going to run RAID 0, you have to setup the stripe on the two new drives. This will wipe anything that is on them. Your options are to setup the raid stripe then reinstall everything or my personal favorite which is setup the stripes, then ghost the old drive and copy to the new raid drives.
