Hard drive / raid question

Hi all. I was hoping someone could help me. I currently have in my computer two Western Digital 320 GB hard drives in raid 0 for storage. After some time, I've decided to build a file server for all of the files on that raid plus more. I'll be using a DFI Lan Party NF4 Ultra-D if that matters. My question is, is that how would I go about on transferring the hard drives and the minimizing data loss? Would it be as simple as just transferring the two hard drives to the new comp. and setting up the raid their and be done? or would it just clear the hard drives when that happens?

no, none of the data on your HD will be lost when you transfer it to your new mobo.

Hopefully you partitioned your HD's so that your OS has its own partition & the data had its own partition

When you put the HD's on the new mobo you really should re-install your OS

Add another drive for an external backup. It'll help you solve this problem and give you similar and additional benefit down the road.

I wouldn't rely on it working that way, if something goes wrong you'll destroy your RAID array and all the data on it. If you've got an ethernet hub then transfer the files over that. If you've got a crossover cable then that'll do the job.

Well, I planned on having a seperate HD for the OS and then just have the two 320 GB HD's in raid for storage. What are the chances of just transferring the hard drives to the new mobo and creating a raid array on that mobo and everything working out fine with all of the data still on it? I planned on getting another hard drive later on but as of right now I really don't have any other way to transfer it.

I'd say your odds are somewhere between poor and very poor. Oh and you do remember that RAID0 is possibly the worst way to store data in the long term?

Oh ok. I guess I could take my chances.

As for raid 0, I understand the consequences if something happens but the data on those drives are somewhat important and somewhat not. I mean, if they were to be lost, it wouldn't be the end of the world but I'd rather not lose it.

So I guess all in all, just transfer the two Western Digital 320 GB hard drives to the new mobo and setup the raid array their and see what happens i guess?

Going down this road, with a RAID 0 array and no backup, doing this sort of thing, there's a pretty good chance that you'll lose everything at some point.

I've lost several RAID 0 arrays, due to OS issues (specifically Linux + Windows interactions), but never lost any data due to that (so far) because I had backups.

If you do attempt to move the array directly, assuming it's NVRAID to NVRAID, there's a chance that it'll work. You should not re-create the array however; it should just be recognized by the NVRAID BIOS. All you should need to do would be to connect enable RAID for the slots in the regular BIOS.

But again, going down this path without a backup is asking for trouble. What's the hurry? Get the backup and then do the transfer. Otherwise, are you willing to lose everything and start over? That's the risk. If you can take it, then it's fine. Just don't say you weren't warned and that the software is crap / etc., if/when you run into trouble.

I understand that their's a chance I could lose the data and I'm willing to take that.

As for NVRAID you were talking about, I do believe both mobos have NVRAID so it should be NVRAID to NVRAID.

Yeah, you shouldn't have to re-create the raid array, if it's NVRAID to NVRAID then you should just plug them in to the new motherboard, and if it is going to work, then it would recognize it.

If you try to re-create it the raid array, then you'll just wipe out the old one.

In case it matters, you should keep the port order consistent. Beyond that... can't think of much else that might help and hasn't been said. Good luck, of course.

Please try and give us an update, I'm interested in whether or not this works.

Since the raid controller is the same, I wonder what would happen if they weren't?

Is there any standard to how raid arrays are created, or can they be self-describing. Someone want to do an experiment?

I recently had to replace my mobo (MSI crap) and just (as sdy points out) enabled raid and was good to go! No problems at all. However i also have a 300 GB interal for backup. Running raid0 you really SHOULD have backups.
