hard drive rack / caddy

So I'm trying ide raid instead of scsi for a change. For convenience I want to use a couple of drive trays for easy swapping of failed disks. I see some of these racks specifically marketed as hot swap capable. I can't come up with a difference though. The ones I've seen in the past cut power to the drive when you unlock its sled. Since i'm going to be using raid I won't be worried about data loss. Is there any reason I should pay more for a rack that sells itself as being hotswappable versus just a cheap one?

Are you planning on doing any hot-swapping with this setup? For IDE, I believe the ability to hot-swap relies more on the RAID controller than the enclosure. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that it would be better to have one that actually advertises hot-swapping, but your controller needs to support it first.

Sure I plan on just pulling a drive when it expires and slapping in a new one. You bring up a good point though, I'll check and see if the 3ware adapter will rescan the card for new drives, etc.

Any others confirm that without power to the drive there couldn't be any damage done by pulling it from service?
