Hard Drive Questions For Video Editing

Hello anandtech! I just have a few questions concerning which hard drive I should choose for my computer. I currently have a 250gb WD hard drive in my computer but it has just under 40gb of space left. I do a bit of video editing in 720p so this is a little bit of a problem.

1. What is the difference between a 1tb caviar green and a 1tb caviar black hard drive and would this be a good choice for storing uncompressed video files? If not what hard drive would you recommend?

2. Should I keep sony vegas, after effects, 3dsmax, etc on the hard drive that I am using right now or on the new one? Should I free up space on the hard drive with my OS?

My price limit is about $100.

Thanks, Adrian.

Heya,

1. Difference is speed. Green is 5400rpm, Black is 7200rpm. The Black is a much faster drive. If you do a lot of movement of large files, you probably should go with the Black. The Green is more for just straight storage; ie, long term but not high use of the data stored on it.

2. Keep your OS/Apps on one drive. Keep your working files on another drive.

The Black is $99.

Very best,
