should i get a Seagate U6 40GB, ATA-100 5400RPM or a
Maxtor 20Gb, ATA-133 7200 RPM (both have 2Mb cache)

*i wont be upgrading HD for a very long time; 3 or 4 years

Seagate 40Gb

im thinking the 40Gb but im not a hardcore gamer or a major mp3 downloader or having hundreds of pointless progammes on my HD so

Maxtor 20Gb

maybe the 20Gb is more suitable and also it is ATA 133 but does the 7200RPM not give out extra heat?

so overall, 40Gb better in the long term or the speed of the 20Gb -ve for the noise/heat????

thanx in advance

I've had great luck with my Maxtor drives; i.e.; no problems yet. If they're both 2MB cache drives, then the 7200RPM Maxtor is probably going to give you better performance. As far as the heat issue, it shouldn't be a problem. Just to be on the safe side, I run mine with an 80mm fan cooling them. 😉

*as far as ata-133; you won't notice much if any difference in speed. Be sure your MOBO supports ata-133; as most don't.

Seagate - 8.9ms
Maxtor - 8.5ms

since you said there wont be much difference between ATA 133 and 100, ill stick with the Seagate, its on order anyway, i was just checkin if its worthwhile changing it

thanx Chain777

Now that you also included the average seek times, and the Maxtor is a bit faster; that you might notice.

Good luck. It won't make that much of a difference.
