Do ATA100 hard drives actually transfer data at 100Mb/sec.? I am trying to decide between SCSI, or IDE raid?

Most drives only average 40MB/s! It is a severe limitation on IDE! A raid setup is very nice since you could get a 200MB/s burst, but I am not sure what the average is. SCSI is real nice, but comes with a price. An u160 controller is 100+ dollars and drives are very pricey when compared to IDE. If you can afford SCSI or a dual IDE setup for raid then more power to you. Keep in my mind Raid does have drawbacks!

Man you guys make it sound like running raid 0 is a death wish. Even with two drives, the chances of losing your data are still very slim.

ATA100 means the interface is 'able' to transfer 100MB/Sec unfortunately today's drives barely give a reason to upgrade to ATA66, given that the best IDE drive on the market only pushes ~38MB/Sec sustained.

I find raid0 on a pair of 60GXP's to be the best combination of IDE drives. Those that have problems with the 75GXP/60GXP's will speak differently. However I have no problems with mine. :)
