I bought a new 200GB Maxtor drive and after formating it only shows 137GB. I know I wont get the whole 200GB but was thinking I should ge more then 137GB? I flashed the BIOS on a dell 8200, user has XP Home Edition and was using it to boot from. I also used the maxtor cd and it only sees 137GB from a 200 GB drive too.

So I just need to know if this is correct Im only going to get 137GB from a 200GB IDE drive or thats sounds low?

Thanks!!!

Did you install a copy of Windows XP that had Service Pack 1 or 2 integrated? 137 gigabytes is the maximum the original XP could recognize on a hard drive.

^The original XP version could see the whole drive over 137 but it required a registry tweak I believe.

PKRush is spot on. Naked XP can only see 137 GB. Install SP2 and you'll have all your HDD back. (It includes SP1.)

Note sure I understand this slipstream? Is it something I do after installing the OS then by updating to SP2 it will give me the rest of the drive?

Slipstreaming is making a copy of a windows XP cd(hopefully your own) and also adding SP2 onto it. This makes it so that SP2 is installed without having to download it off windows update and risk that time where you will be online without the added protection of SP2.

Thanks for the reply, can I still just use the HomeXP CD install it on what says 137GB then go out to microsofts website install SP2 and give me the rest of the drive? As soon as I install the OS I'll go out and D/L SP2 and all the updates. But dont wat to waste my time if that wont work. If not I will search google and find out how to make a Slipstreaming copy of my os with sp2.

Thanks!

You are on the right track now. If the 200/137 is the drive the OS isinstalled on, then adding SP2 will not change that size. You will need tothen use Partition Magic to allocate the unallocated part ofthe drive - or create a partition out of it. The alternative is to completely reinstall the OS with a slipstreamed copy of XP with SP2.

The problem is the LBA (logical Block Addressing). By default, winXP (without any service pack) only uses 12-bit LBA. With 12-bit LBA, you can only address 137GB. So you need to enable 24-bit LBA. To enable 24-bit LBA on a supported OS, the easiest option is to run "maxtor big drive enabler" to update your registry.

So basically, if you have XP(SP1+) or win2k(SP3+), and you're still only getting 137GB, goto the maxtor site and download and run big drive enabler to get access to all 200GB.

Be very careful if you have to reinstall later on with a drive full of data. I reinstalled vanilla XP Pro with a 200GB drive in my system full of data. When Windows booted up, it barfed on the large drive and corrupted about 60GB of data on the drive.

Of course, I may have done something else that was stupid to cause this data corruption, but I'm blaming Windows ;)
