Hard Drive question

Currently Im shopping around for a400- 500gb HDD.
Looking for best bang for bucks as well.

however my question is pertaining, what are the tp 3 brand to look for since im hearing MAXTOR arnt reliable....

also... which type of HDD recommended?

SATA vs SATA II
1.5gbs vs 3.0gbs
8MB vs 16MB

naturally I know 16MB is good.. and so is 3.0gbs or whatever..

what is the avg gb/cent for a HD with 16mb+3.0gbs?
Is it better for me to get 1 HD of 400 or 500?
or a comboination of several HD?
200/200
250/250
200/250
320/160 etc etc...

should I make sure if im going for 2 storage HD, to make sure both are the same gbs and mb?
teach the newbie.. dont kick the newbie!

Best bang for your buck is typically around the 200 - 300 range. I don't like to spend more thna .35/gb but I would say up to .50/gb is acceptable.

It doesn't really matter if you ahve SATA or SATA II, because neither on ehas filled up the bandwidth.

Toms hardward just did a hard drive review, go over there and read it...that will point you in the right direction, but if you get a top maker it is tough to go bad with the stuff out there. Pay attention to warranty, as seagate has 5 years, which is nice.

Top three brands are really dependent on the person...Some people love Maxtor, some people love Western Digital, I don't think I have ever heard of someone not loving Seagate. for me my order of preference is:
Seagate
Western Digital
Hitachi
Maxtor

I have never had a Maxtor die on me and a Seagate just did. Go figure!

It really depends on what you are doing if you are going to get a larger one or a 2 smaller ones...why do you need 400 or 500 anyways? Most people don't fill that space up unless you are downloading a lot of unmentionables.

I would get 2 250s as you can usually find them for $40 or so each on a good deal, but if you space conscious in your case, than clearly the larger drive is a better choice.

16mb cache does speed thins up a bit as does NCQ. The Maxtor III series is nice, don't let a few people scare you off of them.

But go read at Toms that will clear up a lot. And how do you have almost 300 posts and have no idea about hard drives?

Although Maxtor is not my preference they wouldn't survive in this business if they were junk...to answer you other questions it would depend on if you have compatibility to run the faster speeds with your rig...

X2 4400+
epox mobo
2x1gb ram
7800 gtx

I will be doing video editing, HD 1080i so im gonna end up getting more HD down the road, currently I will be suffice with 1 large or 2 small.. later on, I will be needing several large because of the ridiculous filesize space it eats.
so, its not filled with pr0n...

THe other question is how much space does your case have for hard drives? If only for 3 or 4, then get the larger drive, cause I do 3d animation, and I eat up space like no other. My case fits about 10 drives though, so I don't mind saving cash and going with 200gb drives. It is a space issue in the case combined with a money issue. The largest drives however do suffer from slower performance.

no.. b4 anything.. my budget is $200-$225 for a HDD..
I'd like to get as much GB as possible with thta budget.

so .39-.46/ GB is my target it seems.
