My friend doesnt have an anandtech account so he asked me to post:

"i just bought a new computer, everything is new eccept my harddrive. i have amd 64 3200+ with 1 gig of corsier ram, my old harddrive is about 3 years old. my computer is haveing problems and im not sure if it is because of my hard drive, these are the problems.... it takes like 5 min to start up my computer and wen it is in windows it takes like 5 min b4 i can do anything because it is really slow, after the 1"

It's possible since all the other components seem to be good, especially if it isn't a 7200rpm one. He can try defragging the HD and clearing out the prefetch folder to help speed things up. HD are pretty cheap now especially 7200 ATA with 8mb cache.
