So, right now I've got an Athlon XP 3200+ (thats the Socket A old processor), with an ATI 9800 pro agp, an Asus mobo I think, 2 SATA seagate hardrives running in a RAID config, a 480wt psu, a Liteon DVD drive and a Liteon CDrw drive, and a Soundblaster audigy 2. Ok, so a few weeks ago I fried either my CPU or my motherboard, I can't tell which, but I know its not the videocard, because the thing will turn on but it won't display. I've tried resetting the BIOS by switching the jumpers, and no dice. Also I've tried with different videocards and it still won't work. So, I'm assuming right now its either the processor or the mobo, but I can't test either one without buying another one of the other, you see? So, if I should try anything else in this situation, before buying a new mobo, processor and videocard, please tell me at this point.
To continue, I'm take out the mobo, processor, and videocard, but leave the RAM, of which I have a gig, its PC3200. I'm gonna install either an MSI K8N nforce4 Ultra NEO4 Platinum or a DFI nforce4 Ultra infinity for the mobo, an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 939 (venice), and either an Nvidia 6200 PCI-E which uses supporting memory, or an Nvidia 7300 PCI-E which uses its own memory.
My first question is, when I install all of this and hook up the two hard drives which are RAIDED right now, how will I clear them to be able to install a fresh windows? So how will I clear them, once I've installed all this.
Second, does anyone know the deal with the Nvidia 6200 with supporting memory, I read that they outperform the Nvidia 7300's but I don't want the 6200 eating up my own memory. By the by I know these are terrible cards but I don't want performance gaming out of this rig beyond the Halflife 1 engine.
Third, will my memory PC3200 transfer alright over to the new computer? I think the numbers (DDR 400 etc) line up right, but perhaps I've overlooked something.
Finally, does anyone have other qualms with this upgrade, and more importantly, is there anything I may have overlooked in diagnosing this computer as completely screwed to start with, cause I want to basically save money in this situation. Thanks in advance.
