Hard drive problem

Hey guys this isnt a huge porblem but i just want it to be resolved. I built a new computer and with it a 310GB hard drive. However on my computer it says it is only a 127GB hard drive. I was just wondering what i can do to resolve this problem.

What OS and SP do you have on it?

XP that doesn't include SP2 or higher can only ID 127Gb of HD space per partition. Once you have updated teh OS you'll should be able to get partitioning software and expand the partition to take up the entire drive/

You could also define additional partitions to use that additional space. If you're still running into issues, if it's a "new" drive you may want to double check the drive and make sure it's actually the same model you thought you bought.

Thanks you two. Mpilchfamily i have windows xp sp3 on my computer. How do i partion out the drive to have more space? I already have installed quite a lot of things so would this mean having to uninstall stuff?

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management (or something close to that).

You should see your 300 GB drive with a 127 GB partition. You should be able to create additional partitions in the unused space fairly easily. I forget if you can expand your current partition in XP SP3 to fully utilize that space without losing anything or not. There are third party tools can do it for sure. Be careful if you've got data on this drive that you don't want to lose -- if you mess things up it may be difficult to recover.

If you end up needing to reinstall XP you should look into slipstreaming SP2 or higher into the installation.

About my windows xp. Annoyingly enough i only have like the one up from the very original so i have to do so much patching it isnt funny so i would definetly prefer not to have to do that. I had to it at least 5 times when i got this computer a couple months ago and it was driving me crazy!

With slipstreaming, you're basically creating a new windows install disc which includes a lot of the patches already, so it would definately save you some time if you need to reinstall in the future.
