soltek 754 board
2x512 bar of ram

160 WD ata 100 hdd primary master

---120 maxtor ata 133 hdd--- primary slave

under control panel > system > hardware > it recognizes that the maxtor drive is there. it says it's working properly. But when I open My Computer. it doesn't read the drive. No drive letter is assigned and it just sees the 160 GB Western digital drive that i have.

A: Floppy
C: WD Drive - 15 Gb partition
D: DVD-rw
E: WD Drive 140 GB Partition

i don't know what's up... if someone could please help me out it would be greatly appreciated!

Recheck the cable and make sure the jumpers are set correctly...On the WD HD, if it is Single Master no jumper is required but now that you've added a Slave drive then the WD Drive uses a jumper set on its middle pins...

it sounds like you added the second hard drive after windows was installed. when xp loads it sees the drives and assigns the drive id's. i think it's possible to manually change and/or assign drives but it is a royal pain. my choice would be backing up your data, format, and reinstall windows with all of your drives where you want them. this problem starts with everyones idea that an o.s. should install with as little input from the user as possible.
