hard drive problem

I got a new hard drive

but now ive got a problem...

everytime I try to shutdown it crashed with just my desktop bg showing....

Any tips to fix this problem would be great
 
More details please. Like is it a secondary master or slave, primary slave, primary master etc. How is it partitioned/what partitioned it, etc. Is the operationg system on the new drive?
