Hard Drive Problem

Last night my main Hard drive blew up because the platters came loose. So I wiped the system and tried to install windows onto my other hard drive, A Maxtor diamondplus 60, but no matter what configuration I put it in (mast, slave, cable select). the bios would not recognize the drive. So I had to dig up an old 8.4 GB IDE drive and installed windows on that and worked like a charm. This other hard drive was working fine as my backup drive right before my main hard drive crashed. I have checked everything I can think of, bios setting, jumpers, placing the hard drives on different cables. The only time I can get bios to somewhat recognize it is when I configure it as a slave, I get the error message (internal hard drive not recognized as atapi). Can somebody please help, I already lost one hard drive and don't want to lose two.
